Bob Scott: How I 'tricked' 08 Culture of Culture judges

The man who spearheaded Liverpool's successful Capital of Culture bid has admitted manipulating a key visit to the city by judges.

Liverpool was chosen for the title in 2003 after judges said they were won over by the enthusiasm of the city's people.

Now, the team who landed Capital of Culture status has confessed how they managed to paint the city in such a favourable light.

Sir Bob Scott professed to "planting" particularly positive people in bars to talk to judges on pre-arranged pub crawls.

He also explained how the culture team persistently encouraged the media to give blanket coverage to the judges' visits, even though they were asked to divert press attention away.

In an interview with radio station City Talk, Sir Bob said: "When we offered them (the judges) a trip to Liverpool, we said 'you can do all kinds of things. You can go to a play, movie, go on a pub crawl'". Three of them said 'we would like to go on a pub crawl'.

"We worked out who they were and we made bloody sure who the people in the pub were when they arrived.
"And that made quite an impact."

Year of the Environment

Liverpool European Capital of Culture 2008 hands over to the Year of the Environment 2009 and promises to be a really exciting year as we take Liverpool a step closer to becoming a truly green and sustainable city.

2009 sees Liverpool keep the cultural ball rolling with a packed programme of theatre, music and art.

Look out for all of the events to celebrate Year of the Environment and others in the new Events Guide 09 due out in January!

Mathew Street Festival 2006

Mathew Street Music Festival is now the largest free annual music event in Europe. Since it's conception in 1993, the Mathew Street Festival has grown in popularity year on year. In 2006 you can look forward to four days of live music, with over 75 bands performing on five stages across the city, in celebration of the 2006 Capital of Culture year - Liverpool Performs. More than 40 indoor venues will also be hosting free live music throughout the weekend. With rock and pop talent, from the established to the emerging, young Liverpool bands to global legends, this year's Mathew Street Music Festival is set to be an unforgettable bank holiday weekend. The biggest dance festival of the summer is nearly here! The Creamfields 2006 festival is set to be one amazing Bank Holiday weekend for all. There's a massive line-up including Gnarls Barkley, Paul Oakenfold, Roger Sanchez, The Zutons, The Prodigy, X-Press2 ... to name but a few plus many live DJ sets. The fun starts at 3pm on Saturday 26th August in the new location at Daresbury in Halton just 15 minutes down the road from the old location and continues until 6am Sunday morning.
